Not that it really matters, but like many others I do have a fascination with maps. Where exactly the lost city is located is not really relevant. Nor, in a way is where and when the whole setting is placed. This is an exercise in getting toy soldiers on the table in the first instance. But since I am also choosing to see this as a role-playing story it does become a little more interesting. After all, these facts are the elements that inform what a ‘campaign’ could look like. And so here is just a broad brush of the time and place of this interpretation of Frostgrave.

The old published setting of Al-Qadim is the starting point. This places it in the D&D Forgotten Realms world with a technology and civilisation level roughly equivalent to the Persian Caliphate of somewhere around 800 to 1100 AD. Also included in this we might decide to use the fashion sensibilities of anything from the First Crusade and also the Moors and Spanish. The Mongols, to the (historical) East are the barbarians.

MapofZakharaThis is the original map from Al-Qadim, the land of Zakhara. At this stage I do not propose to identify exactly where the wizards are coming from because they could be coming from anywhere here.

What they are searching for is a place that has been described in many legends. Some call it the City of Brass (from Tales of 1,000 Nights & One Night), others call it the City of Lofty Towers (Dungeon mag #201). Some say that it is a physical place that is far beyond an impenetrable desert. Others say that it is in a sheltered valley that is only accessible when certain celestial conditions are correct. Others again say that it is accessible only through advanced dreaming techniques (as in The Dreamquest of Unknown Kadath by Lovecraft).

What is clear from these incompatible descriptions is that ‘the city’ is not in any geographically real location that can be placed on a map with any certainty. It is in some kind of magical limbo, perhaps the result of an ancient curse, and any or all of these methods might be used to get there… or none at all. So ordinary people cannot just stumble upon the City of Brass (I like that name the best) unless they have been particularly fated to get there. The way that people find it, and by people I mean wizards, is by hard study that may take years. Long hours of library research; long trips to different cities and outposts to talk to sages and wise men and lunatics.

Over these years of study a wizard may piece together enough to plot a course to the City of Brass, and these are the guys that are going there. Not just wannabes out for a jaunt.

Finally: here are some Reaper figures that may prove useful.
